Judaism and Democracy in Israel: The Current Challenge
with Rabbi Dr Danny Schiff

In this three-part series, Rabbi Schiff will dive deep into issues concerning Israel's democracy, and its connection to Judaism and religion. The sessions are intended as a 3-part series, but you may choose to attend one, two or all three - please select each session separately when purchasing your ticket.

Series of 3 Sessions (at TBI 7.30pm, Monday evenings):

August 18: Democracy in Judaism
Does Judaism have a democratic impulse? In what way do Jewish ideas contribute to democracy? Are Judaism and democracy truly compatible? In this session, Rabbi Schiff will explore the intersection between the two systems.

August 25: The Impact of Judicial Reform on the Israeli Political System
The process of “judicial reform” began in Israel in January 2023. What is it trying to achieve? How might it be transformational? At this pivotal point for Israeli democracy, Rabbi Schiff will delve into what is happening now and why it is controversial.

September 1: The Separation of Religion and State: What role should Jewish Law have in Israel?
Should Israel have a legal separation between religion and state? Or should Jewish law have a role to play in Israel’s legislation? In this session, we will consider the place of traditional Jewish law in a modern Jewish state.

Rabbi Dr Danny Schiff is Gefsky Community Scholar at the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, author of “Judaism in a Digital Age” and former member of multiple Jewish ethics boards.
