50 Years of Women Rabbis

Fifty Years of Women Rabbis: The History of Women’s Rabbinic Leadership
with Rabbi Dr Esther Jilovsky, PhD
(Temple Sinai, Wellington, New Zealand)

2022 marks 50 years since the ordination of Rabbi Sally J Priesand at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, the first woman ordained by a rabbinical seminary. In this four-part course, we will study the contribution of women rabbis to Jewish life over the past five decades. We will also learn about the life and career of Rabbi Regina Jonas z”l, the first woman rabbi, who was privately ordained in 1935 in Berlin and a colleague of TBI’s Rabbi Herman Sanger z”l before he came to Melbourne. The course will also explore how the experience of women rabbis continues to shape 21st century Progressive Judaism.
